Sometimes I think I might be just a tad crazy. I decided around 4 AM a few days ago that I was going to take on a rather big project...on a rather intense time frame! I have to have this finished up by Saturday, my daughter's birthday. We're hosting our families to celebrate, and it must be done!!! So I've kinda dropped off the face of the earth...I'm terribly behind on responding to comments and emails, not to mention my real life responsibilities! Ah, well. Here's hoping I get it done! In the meantime....
For well over a year (basically since the moment I first saw the plans for it over at Ana White), I have dreamed of building my kids a play kitchen for Christmas. Well, since we were now in our own home, 2011 was the year! This is my second Ana White project (the first was some gallery shelves I still haven't blogged!), and I'm happy with how it turned out:
For well over a year (basically since the moment I first saw the plans for it over at Ana White), I have dreamed of building my kids a play kitchen for Christmas. Well, since we were now in our own home, 2011 was the year! This is my second Ana White project (the first was some gallery shelves I still haven't blogged!), and I'm happy with how it turned out:
It's not perfect, but that's okay. The only thing not quite done is the ruffly curtain that goes under the sink. It will match the fabric I used everywhere else...it's even sitting neatly folded on the shelf above my computer monitor, I'm looking at it as I type! :) And I built a dishwasher, which is the same plan as the oven, I just didn't use plexiglass in the door opening, and only one knob.
I won't give you the how-to, since Ana's plans do that, but I will tell you what I used.
- Wood: whitewood boards (and even those that look perfectly straight are not, just FYI!)
- Paint: Glidden Dapper Tan, leftover from redoing my laminate bookshelves...the color may not look as cute as some of the other kitchens I've seen, but it doesn't clash with my family room!
- Backing and dishwasher insert: old heavy-duty cardboard backing, also from redoing my laminate bookshelves, modge podged with "Italian Flavor" fabric by Vicky Howard (I got it at JoAnn, but I can't find it anymore)
- Faucet and sprayer I picked up at the Restore store, $6 for both! Can't beat that!
- Sink - dog bowl from Petsmart. I got the 2.72 Qt size ($5.49), which happily did NOT have a paw print in the middle!
- Oven insert: Acrylic Sheet from Home Depot ($3.98)
- Stove top rounds: these were actually decorative baseballs I turned over and painted black. Got them at Robert's Crafts, before it closed to sell only online.
- Hinges: 2 inch hinges from Home Depot ($2.47 per set)
- Knobs: Ceramic round knobs from Hobby Lobby (on sale for $1.50 each), metal parts spray painted with Krylon Brushed Metallic in Satin Nickel.
- Handles: 13 7/8 inch Lansa handles from IKEA ($8.99 a pair)
- Magnetic paint: Rustoleum Magnetic Primer ($21.98 for 32 oz)
- Wood letter and number magnets: Dollar Tree
- Hooks for aprons: Walmart
- Ugly Aprons: Dollar Tree
- Pots, pans, utensils, dishes, fabric food from IKEA
- Wood food: Melissa & Doug, TreeHaus
My kids absolutely love it! It's absolutely doable, if you want to do it. And if you want to be amazed and inspired, browse Ana White's plan catalog!
